We had agreed to meet Eric in the lobby of the hotel at 10am to go biking together, so the waking up is quiet without any stress, we are finally in Japan, country of the zen attitude.
We are taking our time as we discover the zen room dedicated to the breakfast of the hotel and the very Japanese buffet offered.
Personally, I am an adept of toast / butter / jam and coffee, and this is the great adventure for me. But the selection is so broad, with fresh produces in conducive atmosphere, I set out soon in Japan mode.

After this hearty breakfast, we prepare for our first outing by bike. It's 20 degrees outside, a perfect time to put a rider on his bike. Gambie and I chose our jerseys in the colors of Hungary without really knowing where Eric will bring us.

We thought we would stay around town but he announced that he will take us to see the "reclining Buddha". In numerous exchanges with Eric on messenger preceding our trip, we had mentioned him this place that seemed not far from Fukuoka.
To access this site, firstly, we had to get out of town. Eric is a fearless rider who know the city like his pocket. Let us not forget that in Japan cars drive on the left side of the road and the streets and roads are narrow. In short, that additional factors making our getaway even more special!

We left our hotel at 10am. We followed Eric as concentrated as possible. We were very watchful but also very proud to bike in this city between the car, on the sidewalks as natives. We left the town by small streets. Then we moved on paths between rice fields. The air was fresh and clean. Suddenly Gambie asked to stop. His right shift lever was not responding anymore. He tried to find the reason, without success. We decided to continue anyway. Gambie left the gear on its small front plate for awhile, until "miraculously" everything works again properly. We were still worried about IT for the rest of the trip and especially for the 5 days of the real ride which would begin on Friday, and for this reason, Eric invited us to have the bike checked by a mechanic the next day.

After a few more km (at +/- 17 km from our hotel), we reached the "reclining Buddha". We parked our bikes without padlock which seem to be not really necessary in Japan.

We reached the Buddha by walk, crossing a small Zen garden, a tunnel, and a small bridge ..

The reclining Buddha is the main piece of Nanzoin Temple, a complex of temples and shrines located in the city of Sasaguri (directly accessible by train from Fukuoka, if you are not a follower of cycling).
All this complex was transferred from Mount Koya, the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan, in 1889. The complex was threatened BY destruction by an anti-Buddhist movement. The Nanzoin complex is actually the starting point of a pilgrimage of 88 temples, inspired by the pilgrimage of 88 temples of Shikoku Sasaguri (on the island of Shikoku). The original pilgrimage of Shikoku Island has a length of 1 200 km, the one of the island of Kyushu is only 45 km long.

The complex Nanzoin is divided into two parts: one organized around a large statue of Fudo Myo O, the Buddhist deity of fire and the other housing the giant Reclining Buddha.

We reached the great Buddha through a tunnel which walls are covered with small Buddhas with the names of the contributors listed above.

Every little Buddha on the wall is a donation to the temple. This is the case also of the countless statues that we saw throughout our visit.

The statue of the reclining Buddha is immense: it is 41 meters long, 11 meters high and weighs 300 tons. It is the largest statue of bronze Buddha in the world. Its position (reclining) is unusual in Japan. It was built in 1995 to house a handful of ashes of Buddha offered by Burma and Nepal to thank Nanzoin temple of ITS regular help (money, medicinal drugs, food). It is possible to visit the interior of the statue but we did not know.

It is said that once, a monk of the temple won the lottery after placing his ticket near the Buddha. Today, it is possible to try to increase your luck by playing a game placed near the feet of the temple. This game is supervised by a Maneki Neko (a fortune cat, a lucky cat).
After paying, you receive three weights that you attempt to launch into little red pots by placing your feet on the ground traces placed for this purpose. If one or more weight land in one of the pots, good fortune will smile on you. The potty located in the center and more difficult to achieve means a larger fortune for you.

Then we visited the part dedicated to Fudo Myo O. This Buddhist deity has a frightening appearance.
His face is scary which is to remind us that demons are waiting in hell if we misbehave. He converts anger into compassion and cuts the ties of negative feelings and demons to liberate us from suffering through self-control. He carries on his head a lotus with 8 petals and their canines are prominent. The right pointing upwards symbolizing the sky and spirit, the left down towards the earth and matter. He holds in his right hand a sword vertically allowing him to face the obstacles that present themselves to him and uniting heaven and earth. The left hand holds a rope symbolizing the concentration and allowing him to tie up his enemies and those who would oppose the awakening of the spirit. The place is so peaceful.

A small waterfall, a small bridge, countless all different statues, lush autumnal wild ...

We could easily spend the whole day in this kind of place, but we have to go back to the city. On our way back to the bikes, we saw a funny representation of the three wise monkeys , sometimes called the three mystic apes which are a pictorial maxim.

Together they embody the proverbial principle of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". In the small shop nearby where we left our bikes, I found A local candy , with a pleasant citrus taste which is not too sweet coated with powder sugar.
Amanatsu Warabi Mochi Amanatsu is sweet summer Warabi Mochi is bracken-starch dumpling .....
I loved it and I have to restrain myself not to swallow the whole package.

On the way back, Eric seemed in a rush and the imposed pace was significantly higher. It is true that we were going down the hills towards Fukuoka. So we reached our hotel in record time. Eric left us and we decided to visit the city and especially to eat !!

We wanted to eat sashimi. The Sashimi (literally "pieced body") is a Japanese meal consisting of raw fish. The fish is extremely fresh, and this dish is accompanied by wasabi and soy sauce. My favorite is the sashimi of salmon, decorated with salmon eggs !!! But it was not in the menu of the small restaurant where we went but I was so comforted with tuna sashimi. A delight !

Then we walked to Canal City, which is a part in the city where we can find shopping centers, located near one of the canals. On the way we stopped in a Coffee house…

which seems where time has stopped in the last century. The lady who was behind the counter was probably born also at the beginning of that century. No menu, she asked us if we wanted two Japanese cafes ... I guess that's what she asked because 15 minutes later, she brought us two coffees.

I saw the bottom of my cup through the "coffee juice” she had served us. I added milk and sugar ... and suddenly, I had a thought of Micu (my father who deceased 8 years ago on this day), it was exactly this kind of juice he liked to drink and to serve (We were on October 26 ... that life is strange).

In Canal City, we enjoyed a crepe with whipped cream and fruits with Kazuko, a friend who lives in my village in the Philippines and who is a native of Fukuoka.

She was spending the holiday with her daughter at her parents’. The world is tiny!

After some shopping, we discovered at the top floor of the mall, a "Ramen Station" : the heaven on earth. Every little restaurant offered a specialty of Ramen.

But I really wanted some sashimis because we had eaten so much during the whole day that a sashimi would be lighter for the dinner...

Restaurant Zayoka at Canal City of Fukuoka

The choice was difficult but perfect. What a delight !

When we left Canal City, it was dark, it was drizzling, it was cool. The walk to reach the hotel was more than lifesaving after our nice dinner. The weather would be fine the next day. I fell asleep with the project of visiting the city by bike the next day ... To be continued!

Amanatsu Warabi Mochi Amanatsu is sweet summer Warabi Mochi is bracken-starch dumpling

A demain !

2016 October 25th : Ride on Kyushu Island (Fukuoka) : Day -2 : arrival on the Island

English

Where to start ?
This idea of bike tour (of 5 days) in Japan came to us from a cyclist, Leo, who bikes with us in the village where I live in Philippines and where I pedal almost daily. He has already participated in this kind of tour, on the same island, last spring. They rode three days from Fukuoka to Beppu and he loved it. So last May when he mentioned that he has plans of organizing another tour in Autumn, we immediately joined the project.
Initially, this trip was to be held between October 27th and 31st. We bought our plane tickets for October 26 but Philippine Airlines simply canceled its flight to Fukuoka for this day and everything was turned upside down.
We had 2 choices : departure date will be on October 25th or 27th. Some people in the group decided to go there on October 27th. We, Gambie and I, left on 25th with the intention of visiting Fukuoka by biking, while waiting for the rest of the group to arrive Fukuoka. Gambie is my mentor, an experienced cyclist who has made me the rider that I am, and he is mostly my best friend.

Bicycles well packed warmly and our luggage ready, we were ready for this adventure. I was pleasantly surprised that PAL (Philippine Airlines) considered the case of the bike (total of 19 kg including the bike) as an ordinary luggage and therefore did not require any supplement. A good point for them !!!

And we even received a warm meal during the flight, which for a user of low cost flights like me (especially in Europe) became totally unusual.

After a flight of 3h45 (+ 1 hour time difference) between Manila and Fukuoka, we arrived at the airport of Fukuoka, the largest city on the island of Kyushu, located in Southern Japan. This port city has 1.7 million inhabitants. (Https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukuoka ). Eric, our cycling guide and the owner of www.japancyclingtours.com , was waiting for us at the airport. Fukuoka is not a big city and soon we arrived at our hotel near Hakata station, the nerve center of the city.

There, on the floor, just outside the hotel, we assembled our bikes! I was so proud, it was the first time! But I was mainly an assistant and without Gambie, I wouldn’t be able to do it. We decided to take lots of pictures of our disassembled bicycles, because we knew we would dismantle ourselves on the departure day.

When our assembled bikes found themselves warmly in the room for luggage of the hotel and our rooms were occupied, it was time to explore the city but especially it was time for eating !!!!

The hunt for the delicious Japanese food was open ... It did not last long. In Hakata Station, we found what we needed: a restaurant of Ramen. What a delight! We ordered also Gyoza (Japanese dumplings with pork, boiled and then passed to the stove), and a cold beer, this ramen wished us welcome in Japan in the most perfect manner!

Outside, it was cool. Yes, the concept of freshness is a very complex notion when after living for over 3 years in the Philippines and specifically in Manila. When the “felt” temperature all throughout the year, never drops below 25-26 degrees, neither night nor day, walking in the” cool” 21 degrees is more than pleasant for an European like me.
Very organized taxi station in front of Hakata Station... looks like a ballet !

Thus it is how our first day in Fukuoka ended. We eventually joined our tiny rooms, tired but eager to be finally pedaling the next daym our first time to bike in Japan!

Our hotel in two words: we chose the Nishitetsu Hotel Hakata Croom (http://www.croomhakata.com/ ) for its location and because of the great promotional offer of Booking.com. The rooms are really small / tiny (I was not able to open completely my suitcase on the floor ), the promised WiFi in the rooms never worked for me but as Fukuoka offers free wifi almost everywhere in the city, as soon as I left the hotel, I was connected.

The hotel offered a daily buffet breakfast. It was very Japanese (fish of all kinds, salads, sausage, rice, shumai ,(small dumplings with pork and shrimp), tea, miso soup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miso_soup ) ), Japanese rolled omelet (Tamagoyaki), and vegetables. (Forget the bread, butter and jam ) Breakfast was served in a Zen room, very nice place with traditional low tables. The shoes were left at the entrance. So if you wish not to walk around the breakfast area in bare feet, please don’t forget to wear socks. A Zen breakfast to start a very good day.

Album of pictures made this 1st day (please click on the following link): https://goo.gl/photos/D5TFESQT91ZnT5CY8

Ironman 70.3 Subic Philippines (March 2015)

A verseny napja :
Vasárnap reggel , kelés 3-kor, reggeli 3:30-kor, indulás a helyszínre 4:30-kor.

Szokatlan!
Le long parcours pour rejoindre le 1er dépot ,
 assez inhabituellement long !

IRONMAN 70.3 Subic Philippines : (March 2015) :
History: well, it should have been a great event, but somehow it did not happen as planned. When in 2014 October, I passed the finish line at the Marathon of Manila  at the second place of the foreign women, and I received a nice cash prize and the same time as the organisation of the first Ironman 70.3 in Subic was published, I decided to use my cash prize to enroll in this world famous organized competition and I seriously trained for it. I think I was well prepared for it ... but my body decided otherwise. Last Wednesday came out strong stomach contractions and very intense cramps. First, I thought of indigestion , but it began to become unbearable, it was kind of waves of pain without any external cause, I think that there is something more serious behind. On Friday morning, after a hard night, we went to the hospital, where all kinds of investigations were carried out, of which the conclusion was: "We could not find anything, results are good (blood, urine, ultrasound ..) I recommend you to stay one night in observation," the doctor said. I replied kindly, "I'm sorry but I have to go in Subic, I have a race there on Sunday, but next week I have time, I'll come back." I signed the papers and went home to pack.
I packed pills against pain and went to the tournament.
On Saturday, I felt some better. I ran a couple of kilometers, ride a little ( to bring my bike to the transition point) and even tried a little swim at the start of the race !! Of course there was still the pain somewhere but it was not unbearable.

The race day:
On Sunday morning, get up at 3 am, breakfast at 3:30 am, starting on the race venue at 4: 30 am. The previous day, we had to deliver the bike at the first transition point. In the morning, I put my bike bottles (filled with water and isotonic drink) in the small fridge of my room .... and of course, I left there and I just noticed it when I was already next to my bike.
I had a one-liter bottle of water that it was difficult to put in the bottle holder of my bike (which later will even break, when at the second time I wanted to put in it the bottle of water). I had to stop when I was thirsty (approx. hundred times) because it was so difficult to handle this type of bottle, from a bicycle holder.
At 6:28 am:  start of the pros and at 6: 30 amm start of men below 40 years of age, at 6: 35 am: start of men over 40 yo, and finally at 6:40 am : start of all women and the first member of relay teams!

Swimming: the water was perfect, not even the sun has set . I went in the water at the end of the field, so I received no kicks at all !! But for some reason, the first 400 meters was terrible. I could hardly breathe properly (this also happened to me in Nagyatád, at the full distance) and finally, after only the first buoy, I started to swim really with a good pace. In this case, it feels so good that despite my breaststroke, and my very bad start, I was able to overtake some freestyle swimmers and I did an rather good time (for me!!). I swam the distance of 1.9 km in 46 minutes.

After getting out of the water, we had to go / run a nice distance to reach the depot (certainly 300 meters). There, I needed a couple of minutes to put on my shoes, my helmet, my gloves and mainly the sunblock cream. I was ready to start biking 90 km.
We started the bike route on the Subic (closed) airport runway. It was quite a unique experience. Then about after few kilometers, we started to climg up the hill. There, the pain/the cramps came back, and I had also a stitch in my right side.  I stopped several times to drink (it was very hot) and take salt tablets. It was windy too. The biking route was about 48 km in one way and 42 km in the back way. The wind was seriously strong to fight against. So much that even in beautiful slopes, I had seriously to pedal hardly to reach a speed of  20 km / h !! Of course, as I made efforts even  I had more pain in all region of my stomach.
I hated the wind which was blowing during more than 2 hours in front and I could not wait to turn. (First 48 km : 20 km / h of average speed) Of course after the U-turn, everything has changed , I could feel to be pushed by the wind !! But unfortunatelly, it is not enought and I needed to perform ... But I was exhausted by the first part! I had to stop to drink and to fill in my bottles with fresh water about a a million times because it was impossible to drink with this kind of bottle on my bike.. (the last 42 km : 23 km / h of average speed) .... The bike route was really unusual. We had a long section of the highway that goes to Subic !! Of course, no shade at all and hitting hot sun (the counter on my bike is also a thermometer and once, it showed my 45.3 degrees !!!)
I arrived almost the last one at the transition 2. I left my bike, put my running shoes and my cap, and again a lot of suncream. People in the transition wanted to encourage me and shouted me "Mam, you have still plenty of time to finish, you have 3,5 hours to do your run and be still inside the limit time" !!!! . Then a few tears started coming, I had so much pain /cramps and stitches everywhere in my body (EXCEPT in my legs which were in good shape and which really wanted to run !!!!!!!!!!) and mainly because I thought that I did not come here to finish just below the limit time, but to do a good race with minimum a new personnal record !!
I went to the half marathon distance of 21.1 km, and I did it in 2 hours 47 minutes !! The worst time on this distance that I have ever run till now !!!!. I'm not really talking about running because I had to walk the half distance, because of pain. It was noon and the sun was hitting !! There was a lot of refreshment points, every two kilometers, with ice and cold water and isotopes!! (For this,  I will be forever grateful to the organizers of the Ironman !!).
So somehow, I passed the finish line by running, after 7 hours 57 minutes !! No pride at all. Huge frustration !! I didn't give up but just because I am extremely stubborn !!
My legs (very important "parts" of my body) and the mental statement (I would not have gone through without this) were AT THE TOP !!!! And if I have not suffered, if breath-cutting cramps were not there, I could have a nice time to go.
It was a fast track and the organization was very professional (well it is not in vain, it was Ironman organization). The pros did very good results: The first man (Timothy Reed, of Australia) did the distance in 3 hours and 51 minutes, and the first woman (Parys Edwards, British) in 4 hours and 18 minutes.
My Philippines runner friends did very nice time and I congratulates them!
I have a bitter taste in the mouth. After months of hard training (10-12 hours / week), I "break down" the week of the race. I think it is not "fair", it is pretty unfair !!
I took the decision just after the race that in Philippines, I will not do ironman half distance anymore, but today, the next day, I am thinking that next year, I will again try one (not an Ironman organization, because it is too expensive), but a local Challenge Philippines , which has to take place at the end of February... 2016) and I will prove myself that I can do a good time race, even here !!
Many thanks to my family who has faith in me and supports me every day. I thank my friends and especially Kai, who did a nice race time , and who encouraged me !!
Now I need to find out why my stomach hurts me, to cure it and then go back to the training course: next big goal : 2015 July 25th : ironman distance race  in Nagyatád, Hungary ( Extrememan) !!! http://www.extrememan.hu/en
