The ryokan of Kanisaki was truly splendid. The silence
was magic and I do not know if it was the tiredness of the 348 km already pedaled
or simply the tranquility of the place but I spent my longest night counting in
hours of sleep. So I put my kimono again for the breakfast.
Like the place, the breakfast is very traditional with
fish and a sweet omelette as well as dishes which names I do not know nor have
tasted.
It will be very difficult to leave the premises, especially as outside it is very cold, windy and even rainy but the road awaits us. We have to be in Beppu today.
The first part of our tour of the day is to leave the peninsula following a hilly road for more than 20 km then arrives the ultimate test of the day.
We begin a steep and endless climb. At every turn, we expect to see the summit but the road just keeps going up. Rey and Gambie start their little game of seasoned climbers. I cling to them as well as I can. I try not to lose sight of them, the slope is steep and the road sineuse. After a few turns, I no longer see them. I climb with Eric. Then Eric must stop at a crossing to wait for the others and point them in the right direction. I started to struggle, I really struggled but no way will I stop.
They wait for me at the top and finally at the forest exit, I see the top, Joe's car, the wives of cyclists with their cameras, as well as the winners of the day.
My legs are dead. My breath is missing but I'm up! At the top !!! In third place (it was not a race, this trip had never been a race… it was just a fight with my own limits and a game with male climbers as the only woman of the group).
I savor my personal victory. This will be the last big climb of this trip.
The stop is long, we wait for others, we enjoy the view and we know that the rest of the daily route will be enjoyable : a quick descent to the valley and the seaside that we must join to reach the town of Beppu, our final destination!
We descend in 5 km what we climbed in 13 km! Brutal !!!!! During this 5 days trip I took some confidence in the descent. Gambie is ahead and I am in his track. I imitate it and all goes well. The roads are damp and covered with leaves, it's autumn, but our descents are safe and nothing is left to chance. We reach the valley and then the seaside.
At 45 km from our starting point of the day, we reach the town of Kitsuki where we stop to enjoy a hot Ramen. Food is like a kind of awarding. We all deserve it more than usually !!!
Kitsuki is renowned for its castle.
Not having enough miles in the legs, we decide to go and visit the castle. It is located on a hill that we climb. We join the castle district without really finding the castle.
I think that at that time, some of us really wanted to continue and reach Beppu. It was still 30km left.
We go along the coast to reach the town of Beppu, which we cross to reach our hotel.
The end point of this incredible adventure.
Upon arrival at the hotel, our bicycles are placed on the roof of the car and in the car of Soko.
Part of the group will take the train back to Fukuoka. Gambie and I, we'll drive back with Eric and Soko will come in with the other car. From the hotel room, the view of the sea and the city is superb.
Night falls on Beppu.
More than 400 km covered! A human adventure! Images full head! Full flavors of memory! And photos filled my camera!

Proud in our pinoy jersey !! Done !! |
More than 400 km covered! A human adventure! Images full head! Full flavors of memory! And photos filled my camera!
The hotel has an onsen and since it is the last night, I do not refuse anything to myself and I go down to relax my muscles in the hot water. I will have benefited to the end, no regret.
We all find ourselves in the restaurant in the evening around a hearty meal composed of various specialties and good well-deserved beers.
Cocktail of sashimi !!! |
The troops are tired but happy! Fulfilled!
Already we are talking about a possible return to the island of Kyushu or to another part of Japan that we could discover by bike.
We walked back from the restaurant without hurrying.
We know that the next day we will not put on our shoes.
The night is calm.
Tomorrow we return to Fukuoka and take our flight to Manila in the afternoon

À chaque tournant, on
